Eradicate Cystic Fibrosis
If we are going to eradicate Cystic Fibrosis we need to know what CF is, and then direct our efforts towards ridding the world of it. Here is a general explanation of Cystic Fibrosis.
A defect in the CFTR gene causes cystic fibrosis (CF). This gene makes a protein that controls the movement of salt and water in and out of the body's cells. In people who have CF, the gene makes a protein that doesn't work well. This causes thick, sticky mucus and very salty sweat(1). As a result, fluid in the lungs thickens and clogs up bronchioles and other airways making it very difficult to breathe. Take a straw, plug your nose, and breathe through the straw. This will give you an idea how difficult it is for CF patients to breathe on a daily basis. When people hear and talk about CF/Cystic Fibrosis, they usually associate the disease with the lungs, but CF affects other functions, as well. The defective CF gene can cause the pancreas to malfunction resulting in a sticky mucus that prevents proper digestion and absorption of fats and proteins into the body(2). This can lead to poor growth in children and digestive issues throughout a person’s life(3). Our goal, here at EchoVerse Comics, is to utilize your donations to produce the Cystic Fibrosis awareness comic book. Afterwards, we will sell the comic and donate the proceeds (as many hundreds of thousands of dollars as possible), to both Cystic Fibrosis families and CF foundations that work to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. Together, we will ERADICATE CYSTIC FIBROSIS! |
